Significance

Over the years, International Women’s Day has evolved into more than merely a commemoration day. It brings to light the incredible tales and achievements of women who have been overlooked numerous times. Every year on this day, we recall our mentors throughout history and endeavor to achieve the goals they set for us. Women from all over the world attend conferences, marches, debates, and conversations in order to tell their stories and make their voices heard.

History

It’s natural to forget how far we’ve come in the struggle for equal opportunity and honor, not just as women, but even as capable productive members of society and the human species, in the modern world. Whether it was amid economic depressions or international wars, women stepped forward to fill responsibilities previously denied to them. Theresa Malkiel, enraged at being refused a seat at the proverbial table, proposed to the ‘Socialist Party of America’ in 1909 to host the first-ever ‘National Women’s Day.’

A group of 15,000 women marched through New York’s streets, demanding shorter work hours, higher pay, and the opportunity to vote. Following this, in 1910, Copenhagen hosted an international conference for working women. Clara Zetkin, Kate Duncker, Paula Thiede, and others proposed an annual observance of “Women’s Day” to advocate equal rights during this meeting.

The next year, on March 19, 1911, over a million people from Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland organized the first-ever “International Women’s Day.” Much later, in 1975, the United Nations officially recognized ‘International Women’s Day and its commemoration on a global scale.

Colors

The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom came up with three colors to represent ‘International Women’s Day in 1908. Purple, green, and white were chosen as the colors of representation, with each color having its unique meaning. Purple denotes justice and dignity, while green represents hope and white portrays purity. If you wish to celebrate women’s day, check the outfits below:
